“Another World” artworks exhibition on march 2021 at Künstlerhaus

“Another World”, an exhibition of artworks by artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai will be held from March 3 to 27 when she finishes her residency at the international cultural center Künstlerhaus. Bethany in Berlin.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai (born 1983 in Ha Tay/Vietnam, lives and works in Hue/Vietnam) was offered a scholarship by KfW Stift for the International Studio Program at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and will complete her residency. by exhibiting her current projects.

In her journey of self-discovery and origins, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai always questions pre-existing cultural and sexual ideas. Her previous works often dealt with the issue of tattoos for women in Vietnam, her current art research centers revolve around personal and social issues, practical concepts and real fiction of life.

With her recent project “Another World”, Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai works with young women in Berlin she meets on the street, makes friends and – once she has become close to them – returns. their houses. There, she defines each woman’s character by imitating their gestures and appearance. By temporarily imitating a certain character, the artist seems to transform into another person. This exciting exploration of different roles is captured by photographer Phan Chi in a series of his compilations.

In addition, in this project, she also transitioned from personal interaction to digital by creating four profiles with individual personalities on an online dating site. Her other clones elicited a different wave of reactions from chatty males, which she later recorded via a video clip. For Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, “Another World” is a complete novel, a kind of experimental work that allows her to come into contact with complete strangers and to reflect hidden parts of herself and her life. life of an immigrant in Berlin from a broader perspective.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai is also participating in a year-long extended research residency in Siem Riap, Cambodia in 2021. Her solo exhibition “Day by Day” is the result of this residency program.
